Postgraduate studies in Europe: looking beyond Bologna

By Terence Karran and Kent Löfgren

Abstract

This chapter examines the impact of the Bologna Declaration on post-graduate education in Europe. First, the rationale behind the Bologna Declaration is analysed, in terms of the motivations and aspirations of the signatory states of the preceding Sorbonne Declaration. Building on this, the impact of the Bologna Declaration on postgraduate education is then assessed. Finally, the question as to whether, and to what extent, the Bologna Process can be adjudged a success is examined
