Introduction to: Being There - Reflections on 20 years of the International course at the Huddersfield Department of Architecture

By Richard Fellows and Carl Meddings

the Huddersfield Department of Architecture had developed a degree course\ud and was fully recognised by the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) by\ud the early 1980s. However, aside from the personal predilections of individual\ud staff members, and a strongly held belief that all buildings should be\ud responsive to their sites, there was no sense of a distinguishing philosophy\ud underlying the course, which marked it out from many other ‘recognised’\ud courses whose curricula were, of course, related to RIBA requirement
