This paper sets out to explore how recent changes in\ud procurement in construction have affected the roles that\ud professions play in the design process. It discusses how\ud professions that traditionally took the role of design\ud manager now find themselves participating within\ud previously unforeseen contexts, working in multidisciplinary\ud teams led by contractors and with changed\ud responsibilities at the design stage. Supply chain members\ud who were not previously involved during the early project\ud phases are being engaged at the earliest phases of the\ud project life cycle and even taking leadership roles while\ud designers sometimes work as supply chain partners.\ud A study of design in construction and other sectors shows\ud that in dealing with design management issues it is critical\ud to deepen appreciation for the unique characteristics of\ud design and the design process. The paper argues that\ud contractors and designers taking on design management\ud roles in a dynamic industry seeking to explore best\ud practice and innovative approaches to procurement and in\ud the delivery of projects need to acquire new skills,\ud management education and develop the necessary\ud qualities
