Studies in the compounds of phenol and pyridine.

The extraction of phenol and pyridine from the coal tar oils of the tar distillery is effected by first agitating the oil with a sufficient excess of sodium hydroxide solution, separating the sodium phenate solution from the oil, and then further extracting the pyridine by means of a solution of sulphuric acid, which is sufficiently dilute to avoid sulphonation of the hydrocarbons present.
