The language teacher’s development

Abstract

This paper provides a commentary on recent contributions\ud to the subject of teacher development and growth, focusing\ud particularly on our understanding of some of the processes\ud and tools that have been identified as instrumental\ud and supportive in teacher development. Implicit in the\ud notions of ‘reflective practice’, ‘exploratory teaching’,\ud and ‘practitioner inquiry’ is the view that teachers\ud develop by studying their own practice, collecting data\ud and using reflective processes as the basis for evaluation\ud and change. Such processes have a reflexive relationship\ud with the construction of teacher knowledge and beliefs.\ud Collaborative and co-operative processes can help sustain\ud individual reflection and development
