Verklaringen voor de houding ten aanzien van Nederlands asielbeleid

By L.D. Nijenkamp

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explain the attitudes of Dutch citizens towards Dutch asylum policy. National identification and the perception of symbolic threat were expected to be predictors of the attitude of Dutch citizens towards Dutch asylum policy because previous studies showed that these were predictors of attitudes toward immigration policy and attitudes toward Muslims. The perception of terrorist threat had an explorative nature and was added as a third predictor to explain the attitudes of Dutch citizens towards Dutch asylum policy. In total, 110 respondents completed a questionnaire that measured attitudes towards Dutch asylum policy, national identification, the perception of symbolic threat and the perception of terrorist threat. Multiple linear regression was performed to examine which predictors were significant to explain the attitudes towards Dutch asylum policy. Results from this study indicate that the perception of symbolic threat was a significant predictor of attitudes towards Dutch asylum policy. The model, which included national identification, the perception of symbolic threat and the perception of terrorist threat, accounted for 29.2% of the variance in the attitude towards Dutch asylum policy. This model was significant F(7,101) = 5.96, p < 0.001. People who experience different norms, values and beliefs as threatening to their own are more likely to pursue a restrictive asylum policy. This is in line with the expectations that were derived from previous studies
