Julgamento relacionado às contingências

Abstract

Compuseram a amostra 174 estudantes. The increase of judgment and subjectivity through the various statements issued by regulatory agencies, requires that accountants and managers apply their knowledge and estimates in favor of an accounting more realistic and less susceptible to imposed rules. The measurement of contingencies is an example of a situation that involves the interpretation of probabilities. Thus, this dissertation aims to verify how the interpretation of the probability terms of CPC 25 occurs and whether there are differences between the preferences or interpretations made from these terms to numerical probabilities, and vice versa, from numerical probabilities to the terms probable, possible and remote. For this, two tests were developed, in which respondents found situations involving decisions related to contingencies, the tests were developed based on studies of Du and Stevens (2011), Du, Stevens and McEnroe (2011), Aharony and Dotan (2004 ) and Tsakumis (2007). Were selected for the sample undergraduate students in Accounting from Federal University of Santa Catarina. The sample consisted in 174 students. To verify the interpretations of terms starting from verbal to numerical probabilities, students were asked to answer what is your perception about the three regions of probability, marking their choices on a scale of 0 to 100%. To verify the interpretations from numerical probabilities to verbal terms, participants were asked to decide on the term that best described each numerical probability, choosing between "remote", "possible" and "probable." Based on the specific objectives were developed three research hypotheses, which, after obtaining the responses of students, were tested statistically, using the U test of Mann-Whitney, Levene Test, and other analyzes. The results show that the means at the point X is not statistically different between the two types of tests. Moreover, the mean point Y are considered statistically different between the test. The variance at point X was not statistically different between the two tests. However, the variances of the point Y was statistically higher in numerical translation. In post-experimental question 86% of the students responded that the inclusion of numerical probabilities to the terms used by the standard 25 CPC would facilitate the interpretation of the contingencies. Evidence suggests that the use of professional judgment may not lead to an absolutely correct solution, with nuances when judged by different individuals and verbal-to-numeric and numeric-to-verbal translation may involve different judgment processes and therefore may have a different impact the financial statements
