Use of rehabilitation services by technology-dependent children and adolescents in a maternal and child hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract

O objetivo deste estudo ?? caracterizar descritivamente a depend??ncia tecnol??gica e a utiliza????o de servi??os de reabilita????o pela popula????o de crian??as e adolescentes de um hospital materno-infantil do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. O estudo transversal descreveu as caracter??sticas demogr??ficas da crian??a e s??cio-econ??micas do cuidador e fam??lia, como tamb??m o tipo de depend??ncia tecnol??gica e a utiliza????o de servi??os de reabilita????o. A popula????o do estudo ?? composta de pr??-escolares (56,3 por cento), do sexo masculino (58,3 por cento), residentes na regi??o metropolitana do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (89,6 por cento). S??o oriundos de fam??lias com rendimentos mensais at?? dois sal??rios m??nimos (70,9 por cento), cuidados sobretudo por suas m??e (93,8 por cento), que possuem escolaridade menor ou igual ao ensino fundamental (54,2 por cento) e n??o trabalham (89,6 por cento). Dos entrevistados, um total de 22,9 por cento depende de tr??s tipos diferentes de tecnologias, sendo o suporte medicamentoso (87,5 por cento) a mais utilizada. O tratamento de reabilita????o ?? financiado preponderantemente pelo Sistema ??nico de Sa??de (SUS) e institui????es filantr??picas, sendo o fisioterapeuta motor (60,4 por cento) o profissional de maior demanda nesse tratamento. O hospital estudado concentra todos os atendimentos m??dicos especializados e a maior parte dos tratamentos em reabilita????o.The objective of this study was to describe the dependence on technology and use of rehabilitation services by children and adolescents in a maternal and child hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Using a cross-sectional design, the following variables were analyzed: gender and age of the children and adolescents, socioeconomic characteristics of the family, technology dependence, and use of rehabilitation services. The majority of the study population consisted of preschoolers (56.3 percent), boys (58.3 percent), residing in Greater Metropolitan Rio de Janeiro (89.3 percent), from low-income families (70.9 percent), and cared for mainly by their mothers (93.8 percent), who in turn have low schooling (54.2 percent) and are unemployed (89.6 percent). Of the entire study population, 22.9 percent were dependent on more than three different technologies, with medication as the most prevalent. Government and nonprofit institutions fund the rehabilitation, and physical therapists are the most widely used health professionals during treatment (60.4 percent).
