Abstract

The present thesis, which has been entitled Learning Communities: the construction of dialogicity in the classroom, had as its main goal the investigation of the dialogue in the classroom from the experiences of two teachers who work in a school which has been made into a Learning Community in the city of São Carlos. Having been based on Habermas theoretical postulates as for the concept of communicative action, and on Freires as for dialogicity, the work presents dialogical theories of the sociology and education fields grounded in which it was possible to evaluate the teaching methodological approaches present at the school regarding the elements which favor the dialogue and the ones which oppose it. The concept of dialogical learning, which was formulated by the Specialized Center in Theories and Practices to Overcome Inequality (CREA/UB- Spain), is also a key one for the analysis of the class, which we hereby carry out. Grounded in the critical communicative methodology of investigation, the present work had the support of communicative observations, communicative accounts of life and discussion forums as its main data collection instruments as well as having entailed an intersubjective analysis of the data in partnership with teachers and children of the investigated school. The data have been analyzed from two dimensions: the transforming one and the excluding one, which are characteristic of the adopted methodology. The first one concerns the elements found in the investigated reality which bring together the individuals who live off of their dreams and aspirations, whereas the second one concerns the barriers which prevent them from achieving their goals. As for this research, the transforming elements are the ones which favor the dialogue in the classroom, whereas the opposing elements are the ones which prevent the dialogical practice from happening in this kind of environment. In addition to these two dimensions, the categories system and world of life, highlighted from Habermas theory, have also been considered for the analysis, with the aim of figuring out which elements found in the investigated reality relate to the system scope and which ones are included in the world of life context, whatever they are, either transforming or opposing. The system, as it was postulated by Habermas (1987), concerns the institutions and society scopes which are controlled by power and money. The world of life, on the other hand, concerns the daily life scope, in which people interact and engage in dialogues in order to reach an understanding. From this point of view, the obtained results reveal almost the absence of the system in terms of enhancing or creating situations which favor dialogue in the classroom, whereas they strongly reinforce the idea of this same system acting against the dialogue. The communicative observations, accounts and discussion forums revealed extremely favorable moments to dialogue in class, but also pointed out obstacles to a dialogical teaching practice. Overall, they revealed that the construction of dialogical classes does not depend on the incorporation of a teaching methodology, i.e. instruments which teachers use in order to achieve their educational goals. Rather, the imposition of a teaching model is presented as an obstacle to the exercise of dialogue. Dialogicity in class, based on what we could observe from this research, concerns a posture adopted by the teacher which implies the acknowledgement that teachers educate but also learn from their students, as well as that scholastic knowledge should be used with the aim of achieving equality of rights and the possible transformation of the world
