O dinheiro e o jogo das aparências : temas recorrentes na contística machadiana

Abstract

Machado de Assis escreveu cerca de duzentos contos entre 1858 e 1907, período que abrange praticamente toda a sua carreira literária, iniciada em 1855. Neste trabalho, buscamos mostrar que, durante meio século de produção contística, o escritor carioca recorre invariavelmente aos mesmos temas, reelaborando-os em novas estruturas, segundo aperfeiçoava a sua obra. Assim, a nossa análise procura entender a retomada temática como fruto do constante amadurecimento do autor e de sua percepção da sociedade. Destacamos alguns contos que foram publicados em periódicos conservadores e destinados, sobretudo, às mulheres, como o Jornal das Famílias, que, de certa forma, limitava a criação artística de Machado. Contudo, acreditamos que nessa mesma época o contista procurou empreender exercícios literários e experimentações discursivas que lhe dariam base para os escritos maduros. No decorrer desta pesquisa, concentramo-nos na busca dos temas mais trabalhados pelo escritor e, entre eles, selecionamos o dinheiro e o jogo das aparências, presentes em vários contos escritos em diferentes épocas. Concluímos que, ao retomar essas temáticas, Machado de Assis parecia deixar implícitos o caráter universal e a atemporalidade de certos sentimentos, como a ganância, a sede de poder, a ambição e a necessidade de se viver de aparências quando a realidade não é bem-vinda em determinadas situações.Machado de Assis wrote nearly two hundred short stories between 1858 and 1907, a period spanning almost his entire literary career that began in 1855. In this work, we tried to show that, over the course of almost half a century of writing, one observes that the Brazilian writer invariably reworked some themes, recasting them into new structures as he perfected his work. Then, our analysis has as main goal understanding the reworking of themes as a consequence of his constant maturing as a writer and his evolving perception of the society. Firstly, we show some tales which were published in conservative newspapers and primarily intended for women, such as the Jornal das Famílias, which, to some extent, limited the artistic creativity of the writer. On the other hand, we believe that Machado used this period to make some literary exercises and discursive experiments that would form the basis for his mature writings. During the elaboration of this work, we concentrated in the search of the most worked themes by the author, among the writer's most commonly reworked themes are those concerning money, and the game of appearances, present in several tales written at different times. We concluded that by returning to these themes, Machado de Assis appears to imply the universality and timelessness of certain human emotions such as greed, lust for power and unbridled ambition, as well as the need for living by appearances, in cases where the reality would be inappropriate in certain situations
