Aesthetics of the image and the discourse on environment protection: the production of meaning in photography and cinema

Abstract

A preocupação ambiental é um dos principais temas da mídia contemporânea, que se articula e se transforma, para constituir mensagens que influenciem os espectadores a formar suas opiniões e agir em defesa da natureza. O presente estudo apresenta uma análise estética de duas mídias visuais, visando à compreensão de como ambas representam a temática ambiental com diferentes enfoques, recursos técnicos e linguagens. Os objetos de pesquisa deste trabalho são o filme documentário Uma verdade inconveniente, idealizado por Al Gore, e o documentário fotográfico Genesis, de Sebastião Salgado. Foi possível constatar que, embora ambos tenham o mesmo objetivo, trabalham com abordagens estéticas diferenciadas, que exploram a emotividade nos espectadores.The environmental concern is an important issue in the contemporary media. The media provide diferent messages to influence the spectators to form their opinions, acting in nature defence. This study presents an aesthetic analysis on two visual media, in order to understand how these medias represent the environment issue by different approaches, technical resources and languages. The research objects are the documentary film An inconvenient truth, by Al Gore, and the documentary photography Genesis by Sebastião Salgado.
