Letter from Captain James A. Burhnam to Frances Israel

Abstract

Captain Burhnam writes to Mrs. Israel informing her of her husband's death. Sergeant Israel died from a bullet wound to the head at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19, 1863. Her husband was "beloved and respected by all the Co." His possessoins will be forwarded to her. The enemy took the ground before they had time to bury him.Elijah Witney Israel (1839–1863) was born in Johnson County, Indiana. He later moved to Rensselaer, Jasper County, where he farmed for a living. In August 1862, he enlisted in Company "A" of the 87th Indiana Regiment. In June 1863, he was promoted to the rank of first sergeant and was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga on 19 September 1863
