Abstract

Israel writes that he has been sworn into the Army. Local ladies had a picnic for the soldiers and South Bend is a pretty town.Elijah Witney Israel (1839–1863) was born in Johnson County, Indiana. He later moved to Rensselaer, Jasper County, where he farmed for a living. In August 1862, he enlisted in Company "A" of the 87th Indiana Regiment. In June 1863, he was promoted to the rank of first sergeant and was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga on 19 September 1863
