Hal Benham III

Abstract

Young Hal Benham III is seen here in swimsuit and in championship diving form as he was photographed by Bretzman in 1930. The customer card listed the Benham family at 4559 Carrolton Avenue in Indianapolis. The city directory for that year lists the father Hal, Sr. and mother Mary M. The father worked at a printing business called Benham & Munday located at 32 East Georgia Street in Indianapolis. Census records confirm the family at that location and young Hal was just 12 years old. Newspaper articles of the time have been found online writing about Hal's diving skills as he competed around the country in diving competitions. He was also found on the list of competitors for the 1936 Olympics. This image is a preservation copy made from an unstable original nitrate negative. The image is part of Series III
