L.S. Ayres Department Store

Abstract

Fred Ayres built a new store on the corner of Washington and Meridian Streets which opened in 1905, tripling the size of the business. The old store closed on Saturday, September 30th, and employees moved the remaining stock to the new building opening the next Monday. The new store had large airy rooms with mahogany woodwork, Paris gowns and millinery were offered on the second floor. A tea room with seating for 300 people was located on the 5th floor, and 4 dressmaking shops were on the 6th floor.Destination Indiana - L.S. Ayres Family Journey; L.S. Ayres Department Store Journe
