Elwood Haynes

Abstract

Elwood Haynes was born in Portland, Indiana in 1857. At age of 15 he demonstrated his interest in chemistry and metallurgy when he invented an apparatus for making brass and succeeded in melting brass, cast iron, and high carbon steel in his blower-furnace. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts in 1881, and returned to Jay County to teach, which he found “much pleasanter than being taught.”Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
