The Wild Turkey

By John James Audubon

Abstract

French-born Audubon’s legacy, his Birds of America series, was sold by subscription. Its 435 hand painted plates depicted America's native birds, drawn from life. IHS's four volumes comprise one of only 119 remaining original sets. The first plate, a wild turkey, exhibited lifelike, artfully appealing qualities setting the Audubon standard--as if plucked from the wilderness brush. Large species, like Audubon's turkey, barely fit the page. Being an innovator, he maneuvered bodies for the format.#1933.0601Destination Indiana - IHS Treasures Rare Book
