Abstract

Communication between medical professionals and patients and their families is of significance for patients’ impression of their treatment, as seen in the nationwide studies of patient experiences (LUP, 2011, 2012, 2013). The article describes how, in interdisciplinary skill development, it is possible to place focus on possible communicative actions in complex situations using creative methods. This approach to skill development is innovative in the respect that it breaks with the assumption that it is possible to create a framework for communication that ensures uniformity and for which evidence can be assessed. Instead, work is being done to sharpen health professionals’ attention to and respect for how communication with patients, their family members, and colleagues is different, depending on the situation, the content and the individuals communicating. The article shows how the participants are involved in a communication analysis of a three-minute-long video produced by the Danish Nurses Organisation, which shows a professionally challenging situation. Evaluations suggest that, using creative methods, dedication and recognition are created in everyday situations, and that, as a result, reflections from the process are remembered and used in the health practice afterwards
