Design of Pervasive Rehabilitation Monitoring forChronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Exercise training is a crucial component ofpulmonary rehabilitation for patients with chronic obstructivepulmonary disease. With fuzzy logic control and wirelesssensor networking, we develop an approach with calibration,rehabilitation, artifact/safety monitoring, and endpoint decision(CRASE) to perform adaptive subject exercise training andmonitoring. This paper investigates an exercise trainingmodel with overload principle and safety concern. To showthe correctness and effectiveness of the proposed protocol, thesystem performance is examined through case studies, simulationanalysis, and prototype implementation. In addition, the performancedifference in training-sensitivity zone (%) between theconventional incremental shuttle walking test and the proposedCRASE is presented and discussed. The experimental resultsshow that the proposed CRASE scheme has better capability toadjust the exercise training level and is promising to efficientlyput exercise training into practice for home-based rehabilitation
