Propriedades termodinamicas de misturas de moleculas esfericas e triangulares

Abstract

The main purpose of this thesis is the study of the effect of molecular shape on the thermodynamic properties of mixtures of condensed gases. The focus is on triangular molecules - molecules that can be modeled as having 3 centres of interaction. Both mixtures of triangular molecules and of spherical with triangular molecules have been studied. Several types of triangular molecules have been chosen: angular, like propane; cyclic, like cyclopropane and ethylene oxide; radial, like boron trifluoride, boron trichloride and trimethylboron. Six binary mixtures in which one component is spherical and the other triangular and one mixture in which both components are triangular (propane + cyclopropane) have been studied. The vapour pressure as a function of composition, at 182.33 k, has been measured for all the mixtures. Moreover, for the xenon + cyclopropane and xenon + trimethylboron systems measurements were also carried out at 161.39 k. The mixtures of propane + cyclopropane were also studied in the 180-200 k range. Furthermore, the orthoboric molar volumes of the xenon + cyclopropane, xenon + boron trichloride and xenon + trimethylboron mixtures have been measured at 182.33 k. From the experimental results the excess molar Gibbs energy (G"E), and the excess molar volume (V"E) could be evaluated. In those cases for which G"E has been determined at more than one temperature, the excess molar enthalpy (H"E) could also be estimated. The systems studied exhibit a whole variety of behaviours, from negative deviations to Raoult's law to liquid-liquid immiscibility and azeotrope.
