Abstract

'Twelve years have elapsed since the onset of the historic transformations in central and eastern Europe. This is a time span that might be long enough to take stock of what we have learned, how it fits into overall international experience, and what, if any lessons can be drawn from this line of research in the context of an enlarging European Union. In order to present a preliminary answer the present paper is structured as follows. First we take stock of the evolution of endogenous transformation research, then we try to put it in the context of global thinking on development, then we compare commonalties and differences of second generation tasks of transformation with ongoing reforms of west European welfare states, and finally we try to address what way a multidisciplinary approach might be helpful in addressing salient features of eastward enlargement of the EU in a scientifically profound manner. The nature of our exercise is such that it allows for a bird's eye view only, thus substantiation in detail in some cases must be left to the references.' (extract)Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht die Entwicklung in den postsozialistischen Laendern Mittel- und Osteuropas seit 1989 unter besonderer Beruecksichtigung des Transformationsprozesses und der EU-Integration. Zwoelf Jahre sind seit dem Eintritt der historischen Umwandlungen in Mittel- und Osteuropa vergangen. Dies ist eine geeignete Zeitspanne, um Bilanz in Hinblick auf das zu ziehen, was erlernt wurde, wie die Entwicklung in die internationale Erfahrung passt und welche Lehren in Zusammenhang mit der EU-Erweiterung gezogen werden koennen. Der vorliegende Beitrag ist folgendermassen strukturiert: Zuerst wird die Entwicklung endogener Transformationsforschung beleuchtet, danach wird diese im Kontext des globalen Denkens ueber Entwicklung betrachtet. Im Anschluss daran ueberprueft der Autor die Entwicklung in den Transformationsstaaten im Vergleich mit den Reformen in westlichen Wohlfahrtsstaaten auf Unterschiede und Aehnlichkeiten. Abschliessend wird analysiert, welche Kriterien ein multidisziplinaerer Ansatz der EU-Osterweiterung erfuellen sollte, wenn er wissenschaftlich fundiert sein will.
