Abstract

Structure, aims, basis and time table of the initiated long-term project 'Verbmobil' are presented. Verbmobil is designed as a complex software integrating different fields of technologies. Verbmobil is characterized by the following distinguishing features: (i) analysis of spontaneously spoken dialogues with dynamical speeker adaption, (ii) negotiation dialogue in face-to-face situation, (iii) portable translator device confined to individual users and specific discussion fields, (iv) 3-language scenario (English, German, Japanese) with English as the dialogue language assuring system transparency and user acceptance. As Verbmobil is confined to face-to-face situations in small conference rooms, additional information are transferred via non-verbal and paralinguistic channels. By the use of anytime modules Verbmobil is to realize a resource-adaptive operation strategy.
