HDTV-Codierung fuer die ATM-Uebermittlung. Intelligente Codierverfahren fuer Bildkommunikation und Multimedia Abschlussbericht

Abstract

During the last few years the digitalization of video services and - with it - the definition of powerful video compression schemes have become to an important issue of worldwide research and standardization efforts. Within this framework the project has investigated HDTV coding schemes for various fields of applications. Whereas first project activities were mainly focused on ATM transmission of HDTV signals, project work was more targeted at multimedia applications during the last two years. In this context the following items have been investigated in detail within the project duration: design of separable and non-separable structures for subband decomposition; development of SBC- and VBR-codecs for ATM transmission; definition of a hybrid approach to object-based analysis-synthesis-coding; design of a scheme for object-related scene segmentation; implementation of algorithms for model-based image analysis and synthesis. These activities have been carried out in close cooperation with the European research projects EUREKA-95, EUREKA-624 (VADIS), COST206 and COST211ter as well as the ISO/IEC working groups MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.
