Abstract

METEOR cruise No. 5 is the first long expedition by this ship, which was placed in service in 1986 and is the newest research vessel in the German Federal Republic. Like her predecessor, the new METEOR will sail for the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean as one of the most modern research vessels. METEOR is equipped to handel multidisciplinary marine science projects with highly specialized technical demands. The planning for the nine month cruise is based on concepts similar to those which guided the great German ocean science projects of the past. Without the necessity of dealing with questions of practical applications, basic knowledge of wide-spread physical, chemical, biological, and geological phenomena and processes in the sea will be gained or increased. The findings may later form a sound basis for future research programmes, which will be more influenced by regional interests and serve to improve the exploitation as well as the conservation of marine resources by the various coastal countries.
