On the parametrization of the biological effect in a mixed radiation field

Abstract

The radiation field in space flights is rather complex and consists in its particle component of light ions from protons to iron ions as well as of their reaction products, generated in the shielding material of the space craft. Because shielding is expensive the biological action of this radiation field should be known in detail in order to minimize the radiation risk. The usual method to estimate the risk is to measure and to calculate the energy deposition i.e. the dose and to multiply the dose values with the quality factor RBE i.e. the relative biological efficiency.
