Die Rolle der Lipidperoxidation in der Pathogenese der Kwashiorkor Abschlussbericht

Abstract

The Kwashiorkor syndrome is a severe form of oedematous malnutrition in children. The project focused on the hypothesis that increased lipid-peroxidation plays a major role in the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of this disease. In the scope of the project several clinical studies were carried out, which showed a direct relation between the occurrence and severeness of Kwashiorkor and the extent of lipidperoxidation in the children affected. Based on these findings a modified dietary therapy was developed, which is presently tested in clinical trials in Ethiopia.
