Abstract

Hemorrhagic fevers are virus infections characterized by an acute and severe course of disease and by sudden and unpredictable outbreaks. The Institute of of Virology at the University of Marburg is engaged in research projects on filoviruses (Marburg- and Ebolaviruses) and hantaviruses that all belong to this class of agents. The studies are focussed on molecular biology, pathogenicity, and epidemiology of these agents. Because of their high pathogenicity for humans filoviruses and hantaviruses have been classified as biosafety group 4 and group 3 agents, respectively. This grant was used for the installation of a P4 facility.
