Abstract

For the calibration of ClO/BrO detector which should fly as part of the instrument package 'Chemistry and Dynamics of the Stratosphere' on the aircraft STRATO 2C a calibration system has been constructed and realized. For the improvement of the calibration by optical detection of ClO or BrO absorption cells were designed and realized; the electronics for detection and the software for data collection have been tested for suitability. The detection limit for the optical detection of ClO (at 277,5 nm) and BrO (at 325,0 nm) with an optical path length of 3,6 m have been improved to be 3,3 x 10"1"1 cm"-"3 (ClO) and 2.3 x 10"-"1"1 cm"-"3 (BrO) with 10% precision. ClONO_2 and BrONO_2 have been synthesized and the thermal dissociation of ClONO_2 was investigated. At a temperature of 520 K chlorine nitrate (>2 x 10"1"7 cm"-"3) was completely thermolyzed within 100 ms. The application of this technique for measuring thermally labile species in field measurement using the ClO/BrO-monitor is possible.
