Ultrathin films of large organic (mostly #pi#-conjugated) molecules have been investigated by NEXAFS, Photoemission (XPS, UPS) and Augerelectron spectroscopy (XAES) to study the bonding behaviour to single crystal substrates (mostly metal substrates), molecular orientation, and/or epitaxial growth. We were aiming to prepare highly ordered films of varying thickness and to characterize the fundamental interactions. Different kinds of organic substances were investigated: aromatic anhydrides, oligothiophenes, quinoid molecules and related charge-transfer complexes and self-assembled monolayers. In some NEXAFS spectra fine structures were resolved which can be interpreted as fundamental vibronic excitations. Moreover, varying the preparation conditions allowed to manipulate e.g. the molecular orientation in NTCDA multilayers. For interpretation of the manifold complex NEXAFS data and satellite structures in the photoemission data of some molecular systems, X#alpha#-SW and INDO/S model calculations were performed.
