For a 3 rd generation synchrotron radiation source, the rf-system has to provide the necessary rf-power to compensate radiation losses in the dipoles, radiation losses in the undulators and wigglers, beam energy losses caused by excitation of higher order modes, in the acceleration cavities, and energy losses due to the interaction of the beam with the broadband impedance of the vacuum chamber, and to allow for sufficient energy acceptance to obtain a good lifetime (Touschek effect).
