Beyond the Grave. Archaeological Research on the Necropoleis at Thorikos (700-480 BC)

By M.H. Pothoven

The ancient Greek conception of the ceremonies associated with burial in Archaic Greece (700 – 480 BC) have been subject of debate for a long time. In this thesis, archaeological evidence originating from Thorikos is added to the corpus concerning Archaic burial customs. This evidence is systematically compared with archaeological material from two other sites, namely Athens (the Kerameikos) and Vari (North Necropolis). The main question in this thesis is: how does the excavated archaeological material from Thorikos enhance our knowledge concerning burial customs in Archaic Attica as derived from Vari and the Kerameikos
