Hong Kong at the crossroads; Controversies over urban redevelopment and cultural heritage

By J.J. Vols

Abstract

This particular research turns its focus towards urban renewal and the preservation of cultural heritage in Hong Kong with Lee Tung Street as a case study. The controversy around Lee Tung Street is one of the conflicts demonstrating how the urban development system is changing due to these new developments. The description will be structured according to the Actor-Network Theory. The case shows that there is a need for a new approach towards urban renewal. The common situation in which old buildings are being replaced by profitable skyscrapers is being questioned more than ever
