Wat is de basis? Geschiedenis van een internationalisme

Abstract

SAMENVATTING In dit hoofdstuk wordt het woord base ‘basis’ behandeld als voorbeeld van een internationalisme. Het woord is gemotiveerd in het Grieks; daarna wordt het overgenomen in alle talen van Europa in verschillende betekenissen, behorende tot verschillende vaktalige domeinen. Een beschrijving van een dergelijk woord staat daardoor los van de afzonderlijke talen waar het toe behoort. Dit begrip internationalisme wordt afgezet tegen een in de Duitse taalkunde gangbaar begrip dat berust op een statistische typologie. RIASSUNTO In questo capitolo si tratta la parola base come esempio di un internazionalismo. La parola era motivata in greco, dopo di che è stata ripresa in tutte le lingue dell’Europa con vari sensi appartenenti a vari linguaggi settoriali. La descrizione di una parola simile esula quindi dalle singole lingue a cui appartiene. Questo concetto di internazionalismo viene opposto a un concetto di internazionalismo, corrente nella linguistica tedesca, che è basato su una tipologia statistica. SUMMARY In this chapter the word base is treated as an example of an internationalism. The word is motivated in Greek and then is taken over in all European languages in various senses belonging to various special language domains. The description of such words is not confined to the various languages it belongs to, but should be done independently of them. This notion of internationalism is contrasted to a notion current in German linguistics based on a statistical typology
