Abstract

SAMENVATTING Dit hoofdstuk is een persoonlijke visie op prototypensemantiek, gevolgd door een prototypische behandeling van de Italiaanse voorzetsels su en sopra. Het algemene gedeelte maakt een scherp onderscheid tussen uitbreiding van een kernbetekenis, de polysemische relatie tussen deelbetekenissen en de hiërarchische verhouding tussen hyponiemen en hyperoniemen. Het formuleert ook de semantische regels tussen de deelbetekenissen van het woord cassa ‘kist’. Voor su en sopra wordt uitgegaan van een basisbetekenis met vier kenmerken: ruimtelijke relatie, verticale as, superioriteit en contact. De overige betekenissen ontstaan door deze kenmerken te variëren. RIASSUNTO Questo capitolo costituisce una visione personale della semantica dei prototipi, seguita da un trattamento prototipico delle preposizioni italiane su e sopra. Nella parte generale si fa una distinzione netta tra l’estensione di un senso di base, la relazione polisemica tra i sensi e la relazione gerarchica tra iponimi e iperonimi. Inoltre si formulano le regole semantiche operanti tra i vari sensi della parola cassa. Per su e sopra si parte da un senso di base con quattro tratti: relazione spaziale, asse verticale, superiorità e contatto. Gli altri sensi nascono tramite variazione dei singoli tratti. SUMMARY This chapter is a personal view of Prototype Semantics, followed by a prototypical treatment of the Italian prepositions su and sopra. In the general part the author makes a strict distinction between the extension of a basic sense, the polysemic relation between the various senses and the hierarchic relation between hyponyms and hyperonyms. Semantic rules are formulated for the relation between the senses of the Italian word cassa ‘chest or case’. For su and sopra a set of four features is proposed: spatial relation, vertical axis, superiority and contact, from which the other senses can be derived by varying the individual features
