By L. Benali

Abstract

Aim: The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dimensions of parenting, self- image and reactive and proactive aggression of children between the age of nine and twelve years old. Participants: Our sample included 180 children (132 boys and 48 girls) and 217 parents (134 mothers and 83 fathers). The mean age was 10.9, with a minimum of 8.70 and a maximum of 12.07 years. Methods: In this study, we used a questionnaire (REPRO), that examined aggression by two dimensions: reactive and proactive aggression. The CBSK examined self- image by three dimensions: social acceptance, behavioral attitude and global self worth. The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire and the Parenting Scale assessed positive and negative dimensions of parenting. Results: For mothers (overreactivity) as well as fathers (inconsistent discipline) negative dimensions of parenting were related to reactive and proactive aggression. Other results suggested that there was a negative association between global self worth and reactive and proactive aggression. Keywords: reactive and proactive aggression; self- image; externalizing behavioral problems; dimensions of parenting

Topics: Sociale Wetenschappen, reactive and proactive aggression, self- image, externalizing behavioral problems, dimensions of parenting.
