Invloed van de zelfwaardering van de adolescent op het vertonen van agressief en delinquent gedrag.

By W.E. van Rossum

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to examine to what extent indices of self esteem in different life domains predicts increases in aggressive and delinquent behaviour in adolescence over time. The potential moderating effects of gender were also investigated. Adolescents’ self esteem was assessed on the following domains: Scholastic Competence, Social Acceptance, Athletic Competence, Physical Appearance, Behavioural Conduct, Friendships, Romantic Appeal and Global Self-Worth. The data are collected as a part of a longitudinal study. 563 Dutch students were involved at the first measurement and 503 at the second measurement. They all filled out the Youth Self-Report and the Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents at two times within a one-year interval. Analysis revealed that a higher level of self esteem in the domain of Athletic Competence was associated with a greater increase in aggressive behaviour over time, whereas a higher level of self esteem in the domain of Behavioural Conduct predicted a less greater increase in aggressive behaviour over time. The principal findings for delinquent behaviour were: higher levels of self esteem in the domains of Athletic Competence, Physical Appearance and Romantic Appeal were associated with greater increases in delinquent behaviour over time. A higher level of self esteem in the domain of Behavioural Conduct was associated with a less greater increase in delinquent behaviour over time. In addition, gender had a moderating effect on the relationship between self esteem in the domain of Friendships and changes in aggressive behaviour over time, and on the relationship between self esteem in the domain of Behavioural Conduct and changes in delinquent behaviour over time. It was concluded that the effects of self-esteem during adolescence on aggressive and delinquent behaviour were weak. Self esteem, aggressive behaviour, delinquent behaviour, adolescence
