De Incredible Years oudertraining als geïndiceerde preventie: het effect op het disruptieve gedrag van vierjarige Nederlandse kinderen.

Abstract Background: The early emergence and developmental implications of disruptive behavior in toddlers increases the risk of later serious, violent and chronic offending and other continuing problems like unemployment and substance abuse. Therefore evidence-based interventions are needed. Several studies classified parent-trainings as efficacious and well established. However, there are only few interventions that focus on the prevention of disruptive behaviour. One of the few preventive interventions that has been proven effective is the Incredible Years Videotape Modeling Parent-Training that is designed to modify disruptive behavior in toddlerhood. The present study examined the effectiveness of the Incredible Years Videotape Modeling Parent-Training as indicated prevention in order to reduce disruptive behavior in Dutch toddlers. Method: Participants were 144 families of 4-year old children with disruptive behavior. The families were assigned to the Incredible Years Parent-Training or to a non-intervention control condition. Paired samples t-tests were used to identify intervention- and preventive-effects. Results: Parent ratings of disruptive behavior problems indicated that the Incredible Years Parent-Training only prevents the disruptive behavior of the children who are most at risk (highest 25%). Analyses of all children revealed only a few trends in reducing disruptive behaviour. High effect-sizes indicate that there is some effect of the Parent-Training as a preventive intervention. Conclusions: Findings suggests that the Incredible Years Parent-Training only realizes improvements in children who are most at risk. Those children benefited most from the preventive program
