Lateral mobility of plasma membrane lipids in a molluscan egg: Evidence for an animal/vegetal polarity

The lateral diffusion of the lipid analog\ud C₁₄-diI (3', 3'-dihexadecylindocarbocyanine\ud iodide) was measured in the plasma membrane\ud of early embryos of the mollusc Nassarius\ud reticulatus using the FPR-(Fluorescence\ud Photobleaching Recovery) method.\ud At almost all stages measured (from fertilized\ud egg up to 8-cell stage) the diffusion\ud coefficient (D) of the mobile fraction\ud (MF) of C₁₄-diI is significantly\ud higher in the plasma membrane of the polar\ud lobe as compared to the plasma membrane of\ud the animal half of the embryo. These results demonstrate the presence\ud of an animal/vegetal polarity in the\ud plasma membrane of the embryo of Nassarius,\ud possibly related with the polar localization\ud of morphogenetic factors
