Abstract

This paper reconstructs the view of rhetoric implicit in sections 135-177 of Aelius Aristides's oration 'In defence of rhetoric' (2nd C AD). It provides a close analysis of these sections and relates Aristides's views to two main theorists of rhetoric, Isocrates and Plato
