Burma’s New Capital: Paranoia, Historical Legacies, or Strategic Choices?

Abstract

Este artículo analiza las posibles causas que han llevado al régimen militar de Birmania a abandonar la antigua capital de Rangún (Yangon) por Naypyidaw. Aunque no están claras, las causas parecen estar estrechamente vinculadas con el miedo de las autoridades a perder el poder, el deseo personal de su líder supremo de dejar un legado histórico y la necesidad de control de las regiones periféricas.This article analyzes the possible reasons that had led the Burmese military government to abandon the ancient capital ofRangoon (Yangon) to Naypyidaw. Although confusing, these reasons are closely related to the fear of local authorities of losing power, the personal desire of the supreme leader to give an historical legacy to his people and the control of the border zones
