GLOBALIZATION: THE LAST STAGE OF CAPITALISM? Muniz Gonçalves Ferreira This article starting point is the confrontation between Karl Marx’s analysis about the development of capitalism in the nineteenth century and Vladimir Lenin’s studies about Imperialism and the capital in the beginning of the twentieth century. From this point on, it tries to approach the globalization phenomenon, adopting a less rigid and orthodox perspective from the Marxist tradition point of view. Then, the article tries to understand the origins of the ongoing economic transformations in the capitalist economies in the turn of the twentieth century. After stressing out the negative implications of the economical globalization regarding the search of autonomy and development of the peripheral countries, it also stresses out the socialization possibilities of the cultural, scientific and material conquest. The text ends up inviting the left wing globalization critics, in particular those who are linked to the Marxist tradition, not to envisage globalization as a lost battle but rather as a new battlefield for human emancipation.
