Bacterial diseases caused by phytopathogenic bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Wells et al.) in Europe

Abstract

Bakterija Xylella fastidiosa potječe iz SAD, a uspješno se udomaćila u Europi gdje se pojavila 2013., uzrokujući velike štete na maslinama u Italiji. Sve više država prijavljuje zarazu i provodi karantenske mjere. Bakteriju prenose kukci koji se hrane ksilemskim sokom. Nakon unosa bakterije u biljku, ona se umnožava i začepljuje provodne žile, što rezultira pojavom simptoma sušenja, odumiranjem grana, a kasnije i uginućem biljaka. Za pouzdanu identifikaciju bakterije potrebno je provoditi genomska testiranja. Glavni problem suzbijanja je nepostojanje kemijskih mjera za suzbijanje ove bakterije. Treba provoditi propisane mjere uklanjanja i uništavanja zaraženih dijelova biljaka, suzbijati kukce-vektore, slijediti zakone koji reguliraju postupanje u okolnostima pojave ovog patogena, ali i razmotriti mogućnosti biološkog suzbijanja i pokušati naći prirodne izvore otpornosti biljaka kako bi se pokušalo smanjiti štete i utjecati na opasnost od nekontroliranog širenja ovog devastirajućeg patogena.The bacterium Xylella fastidiosa originates from the USA, has successfully settled in Europe where it appeared in 2013, causing great damage to olives in Italy. More and more countries are reporting new findings and they are starting to implement quarantine measures. The bacterium is transmitted by insects feeding on xylem. After the bacteria enter the plant, it multiplies and clogs the vessels, resulting in the drying of the branches, and finally causing the death of whole plant. Genomic testing is required for reliable identification of bacterium. The main problem of control is the lack of chemical measures. Infected plant parts should be removed and destroyed, insects-vectors should be controlled, legislative regulation for this pathogen should be followed, but also possibilities of biological control and search for natural sources of plant resistance should be considered in order to avoid the uncontrolled spread of this devastating pathogen
