Fairies in the literary works of Zadar poets

Abstract

This work is based on the presence of a fairies as the character in the works of poets of Zadar. The motive of the fairy has been known from folk traditions, and was later taken in the works of Croatian writers. The fairies are most often described as a young girls with long hair, dressed in white robes, who live far away from people. Fairies often meet with people, talk with them, and help people if it's required. Zadar Renaissance period was marked with the conquests of the Zadar and it's county, and this period was very difficult for the Croatian identity, language and culture. However, during this period, in Zadar lived and worked writers who, through their literary works, sought to raise awareness of the Croatian people, and point out the importance of Croatian culture and tradition. The best and most significant writers of Zadar Renaissance are Petar Zoranić and Juraj Baraković. The most significant literary work from Petar Zoranić, which is also considered the most complex work of Croatian Renaissance literature, is the novel "Mountains". It is a novel with autobiographical, travelogue and patriotic elements. The novel follows the main character, a poet Zoran, on his journey through the northern Dalmatia and Lika, during which the poet encounters with real (shepherds), and mythological figures (fairies). The poet's journey has an allegorical meaning, and also represents the poet's inner journey towards maturation and the knowledge itself. Fairies in the novel "Mountains" also have a metaphorical meaning and symbolize the Croatian language and literature. Motive of fairy is also present in the most important literary work written by Juraj Baraković, "Fairy Slovinka". It's a poem that also contains autobiographical, travelogue and patriotic elements, and the main character is Pisnik that travels through the Sibenik area. Pisnik on his journey, which also has an allegorical meaning, except with real characters also encounters with mythological character, fairy Slovinka, which also symbolizes the Croatian people, and through her narrative she promotes the Croatian language and culture. Among the novel "Mountains" and literary work "Fairy Slovinka" in many aspects of the observed number of similarities (autobiographical elements, travelogue features, the motive of patriotism, Christianity, love for Zadar, and love in general, the motives of desire and fornication, the motives of hell, mythological characters - the fairy as a symbol of the Croatian people, allegory, promotion of Croatian culture and language...), and the comparsion is supported by citations
