Prophet and Apostate in the Autobiography of Protopop Avvakum: a Symbolic Reading of Historical Fact

Abstract

The view of Archpriest Avvakum, reflected in the text of his «Life», is considered a symbolic confrontation between him and Patriarch Nikon. The writer interprets the conflict through comparison with the biblical events from the Book of the prophet Habakkuk. The significance of the creation of the New Jerusalem by Nikon as a manifestation of pride is assessed. The clash of Nikon and Avvakum acquires the importance of protecting all Christianity and saving the world from the Antichrist.Рассматривается взгляд протопопа Аввакума, отраженный в тексте его «Жития», на символическое противостояние между ним и патриархом Никоном.
