The Short Career of Q. Lucretius Afella

By Arthur P. Keaveney

Abstract

This paper examines the career of a minor figure in the Sullan revolution. The author has established that Afella obtained a vital command in the first Civil War despite having neither political nor military experience. Thanks to this he defied Sulla’s wishes and sought an office to which he was not entitled. The dictator then cut him down. This paper represents the first detailed study of this episode
