Problem of Realization of Historic Film today

By Pavlína Kalandrová

The problem of the production of a historic film in the contemporary Czech film milieu is observed from three diferent points of view: film studies, film production and distribution. The genre of historic film is defined widely and contains also period film and ?retro? film. Always there is a genre mixture. In the history of czech cinematography, there is historic film present from the begining and its importance changes according to the political situation. Two eminent personalities of czech historic film are the director František Vláčil (until the 80) and the sceenwriter Vladimír Körner until today. Although the present time seems to be unfavorable to historic film production, we have to submit that there are about two historic films a year produced in the Czech Republic. But in the international context, those are relatively small film projects. Often they are co-produced with the Czech Television. Only a few of the realized films become big distribution and production succes (Dark Blue World, Cosy Dens). An eventual problem of a historic film production today doesn't dwell in the genre itself, but in the next genres it contains (comedy, drama etc.), in the theme and in the demandingness of its artistic interpretation. The posibility of the realization of non-comercial, artistic historical film depends on a good system of state suport of czech film production
