Teachers’ Problems and Efforts in Teaching Reading to the Eleventh Grade Students at SMA Islam Almaarif Singosari.

Pd.   Key words: lesson plan, teaching reading, teachers’ problems, teachers’ efforts               This study is aimed to describe teachers’ problems and efforts in preparing teaching reading (in the form of lesson plan)     and teaching reading in the class. It is not an easy job for a teacher to prepare a lesson plan and implement it in the class. There are problems involved which have to be solved by great efforts in order to make the class go smoothly.             This study was a descriptive qualitative study which described the problems faced and the efforts made by the teachers in teaching reading. The subjects of this study were two teachers who taught eleventh graders at SMA Islam Almaarif Singosari. Some instruments were used to help the researcher in gaining the data, such as observation checklist, interview guides, and document analysis.             The result of the study showed that the problems faced by the teachers in the teaching preparation of teaching reading were, (1) deciding the learning objectives which suit their students ability and level of development (2) selecting the teaching materials that are relevant and interesting enough to the students (3) selecting teaching media that suits the lesson topic (4) designing relevant learning activities that suit the time allocation activities (5) developing scoring rubric. The efforts which were done by the teachers to overcome those problems were, (1) revising their learning objectives (2) finding other materials from other sources and making their own materials (3) finding other alternatives media (4) changing the step of the activities (5) revising, learning, and asking other teachers about how to make a good scoring rubric.             The problems which were faced by the teachers in teaching reading in the class were, (1) the lack of interest and attention of some of the students (2) the limited vocabulary of the students (3) the teaching media that could not be used (4) the time allocation management. The efforts which were made to overcome those problems were, (1) giving warnings to the students, (2) repeating the explanation about the topics and asking the students to look up their dictionaries (3) finding other alternative media as soon as possible (4) carrying out group work in order to save time             Based on the result of this research, it was suggested that the teachers should be more ready in facing any problems that will appear in the teaching and learning process and improve their efforts in solving the problems in teaching and learning process. For other researchers who are concerned with similar issues, it is expected that they can conduct the research in other schools and other level of education to see other problems which are faced by other teachers and how to overcome them
