PROGRAM PENDIDIKAN DAMAI DI AMBON

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze problems that hamper the implementation of peace education program in Ambon optimally, as well as providing the recommendations toward those problems. Basically, the peace education program refers to a conflict prevention action which tries to impart the values of peace within the young generations through a peace education curriculum that is adjusted to the condition or need of a region or a state. The peace education program that is conducted formally in this context, is expected to mold the Moluccan young generations to promote peace in order to support sustainable peace. At this point, the peace education obviously becomes a need by considering the condition of Moluccas which is not peaceful yet or in other words, still not reached the positive peace yet according to Galtung�s concept of peace. Seriously, the condition of Moluccas in the past five years did not showed a very good record of peaceful condition since it was highlighted by several contentions between the Moslems and Christians and also several burning actions caused by the issue of religious injustice between those two religions. It then came to be aggravated by September 11, 2011 conflict which completely reflected the unpeaceful condition of Ambon in particular. Moreover, the bitter experiences of conflict seriously encouraged the local government to take action in order to promote peace. Unfortunately, although the local government was assisted by external actors such as UNICEF, UNDP, and any other NGOs that concerned on peace education, the peace education program in fact, was not implemented optimally in Ambon, and even experienced stagnation. In this context, the writer believes that there are two important aspects that hinder the implementation of this program optimally, which are the technical aspect and substantial aspect. Technically, the writer found out several things such as teacher training, the implementation of Mayor Regulation No. 2/2010, curriculum, coordination, and monitoring and evaluation which hampered the implementation of this program optimally based on the interview results from a number of informants. Furthermore, after analyzing those aspects the writer then came into conclusion that the peace education program in Ambon was not planned comprehensively, therefore it fully affected those five aspects discussed above, whereas they became the essential instruments to develop a peace education program. Besides, the local government�s weak commitment to promote a sustainable peace is also counted seriously as the primary factor that hamperes the peace education program. Therefore, the main recommendation toward the problems being discussed in this study lied on those two aspects where both government, stakeholders and also any other parties who responsible for this program must enhance the quality of their planning, so that this program can be developed well, and the most important thing that must be upheld is how they can seriously commit to promote a sustainable peace in Moluccas
