The transition to the market economy should promote a greater investment in education and training of employees, for only properly trained work force can contribute to higher productivity and consequently greater competitiveness in global markets. The statistical data illustrating participation of employees in various training programmes show that certain forms of education are being revitalised after having been somewhat neglected in the early nineties, during the period of reorganisation of the economy. However, there are substantial differences between various economic spheres. People employed in the public sector, financial, technical and business services are privileged and have greater access to training programmes - to formal education as well as to professional training and courses. Employers and employees favour shorter training programmes, while interest in longer programmes leading to various officially recognised degrees and certificates is on the decline.Prehod v tržno gospodarstvo naj bi spodbudil k vlaganju v izobraževanje in usposabljanje zaposlenih, saj le ustrezno usposobljeni delavci prispevajo k povečanju produktivnosti podjetij in s tem konkurenčnosti na globalnih trgih.
