Phytotherapeutic potential of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.)

By Ivana Vlahušić

Abstract

Provedena znanstvena istraživanja ukazuju na njegov terapijski potencijal u smanjenju simptoma i liječenju šećerne bolesti tipa 2, dislipidemije, anksioznosti, depresije i poremećaja spavanja, primarne dismenoreje i predmenstrualnog sindroma. Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) has a long and widespread traditional use in Europe, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Conducted research showed its therapeutic potential in reducing symptoms and treating type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, anxiety, depression and sleep disorders, primary dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome. Lemon balm shows a pronounced antioxidant property attributed to polyphenols in plants. It also improves cognitive function. It's traditionally used for topical treatment of herpes infection, and modern research has confirmed the antiviral activity of plant species. Due to the still limited data, more research is being done to investigate the effects of lemon balm on human health as well as its mechanisms of action and potential side effects. Today, lemon balm can be found in pharmacies and special dispensaries as a herbal drug and dietary supplement
